Character: Vivi Ornitier
Series: Final Fantasy IX
Age: Six months. Vivi is a Black Mage and, as a result, has the lifespan of about a year. Physically he looks like a child of nine years old, excluding his more "exotic" features, and he sounds about that age.
History: Wiki link.
Canon Point: Just after finding the Black Mage Village. Vivi is taken when he and his friends stop there to rest and ask questions.
Personality:
Vivi's perhaps most important characteristic, that separates him from other Black Mages, is his curiosity. Whereas most of the other Black Mages who became sentient eventually created a village and stayed put, Vivi ventures out into the world after the death of his 'grandpa', Quan. During the game, he wanders, trying new things (like the Lindblum pickles) and making friends. He's extremely inexperienced in the world, at first believing everything other people say and getting victimized with a false ticket to a theatre performance as a result. Because of this confidence issue, he's shy and it's easy to socially pressure and bully him. He often stammers and looks at his feet in social situations rather than making sure his opinion is heard.
Given an option between conflict and peace, Vivi will try for peace every time. That said, Vivi isn't a coward. He has a very strong protective instinct where his friends (and also innocents, like the Black Mages that Black Waltz Three kills) are concerned. If they're in danger, Vivi might be scared, but he'll do the right thing and jump in to help them. At the beginning of the game, he can barely do this, but as his friendship with Zidane grows Vivi becomes a little more confident in his abilities.
Another big aspect of his personality is his questioning of the world around him. He questions his place in it, and why it exists, especially after he and his friends come upon Dali and they find the Black Mage factory. Seeing the mindless drone Mages understandably rattles him, and it becomes worse when he sees them fighting as an army for Alexandria. He has nothing but questions. Why do some Awaken, like he did? Why are they being created? How have they been created? Finding their Village answers a few questions, but also digs up more. He discovers that, after a year, the Mages (who identify themselves with numbers) 'stop'. Vivi knows that this is death, because of his experiences, but the much more innocent Mages are always baffled by it.
Despite his shyness, Vivi is willing to bridge the gap in conversations with kindness, and he is very trusting of his friends. As said before, he's also trusting of strangers to some extent, though he does get better about it. But after his Awakening, he does accept that a Qu is his grandfather and speaks of him as though they're the same race (to the surprise of his friends, when he later reveals this). He's hesitant to speak ill of others, even potentially very disturbing things, although this is also a problem rooted in his confidence issues. His brief periods of depression and quietness, because of his nature and his 'making', constitute his darker half. He also has some bouts of anger, usually when his friends are threatened, that throw his emotions into high-gear and make him a more focused and powerful spellcaster. But it's very difficult to rile him otherwise, and in general Vivi is painfully polite.

[Journal Entry:]
Today we found the Qu. They looked just like Grandpa Quan, and they were just as hungry, too. We found them on accident, going through the swamp, on our way to Burmecia. Freya kept saying how we were taking the long way. Zidane kept reassuring her that this was a "better way." There were a lot of monsters and grumpy things that we had to sneak past. A few times we had to fight. Freya says they're more numerous now than they've ever been, even in the swamp.
And that was when we found Quina, and Quina's village. I don't know if Quina is a Mr. or a Ms. Maybe they don't... work like that? But Quina's just like my grandpa in that it's hungry all the time, especially for frogs. That's what it was doing when we found it. Maybe if we were all frog-sized, it would try to put us in a cooking pot, too. I think Quina would eat almost anything if we said it tasted good. Or even if we said it tasted bad. I'm glad to have Quina along, though. It knows the swamp pretty well, and it knew the way out. We've promised to let it sample lots of food on our trip, but I don't know how that will work out if Burmecia's been attacked as badly as the Regent thought...
Oh well. Nothing bad about having someone else along!
Third Person Sample:
Vivi had heard something of Alexandria Castle from fellow travelers, but they hadn't prepared him for the sheer size of the city surrounding it. It was a maze, a maze of colors and sights and smells that left him breathless and curious all at once. There were so many people — and people of all shapes and sizes, too. What disappointed him was that he didn't see anyone who looked like his grandpa, and he'd been hoping to maybe find another like him. Maybe see if Quan had had other relatives.
But Vivi forgot that relatively quickly, as he wandered through the shops and streets. He came across an outdoor vendor who was selling brilliantly white, delicate flowers that seemed to explode out of their stems in thick wisps. The vendor was a kindly-looking, older woman who blinked in surprise at Vivi's appearance.
He'd been seeing a lot of that, too, today.
"U-um," he said, slowly, "hi."
"Hello, sweetie!" she greeted him, apparently getting over her initial surprise at the sound of his voice. "Do you like my flowers? Maybe there's a special lady you could buy one for?"
Vivi frowned a little, not that it was visible to anyone else. "A special lady...?"
"A girl," the vendor insisted, with a broad smile. "A pretty young lady you might have your eye on?"
He didn't know what this meant. He didn't know any girls, though, so he just shook his head. She looked sympathetic, at that, and plucked a flower from one of her show vases, extending it out to him. Vivi blinked his glowing eyes at her.
"Well, have one on the house, then. Maybe it'll help you find one."
"Oh! T-thank you." Vivi took it unsteadily, turning it over in his hand. It was just as beautiful as it had looked on the table. And now he saw that there were dashes of brilliant yellow in the very center of it, hidden by the frills of white. "I can pay for it..."
"No, no. On the house," she said, beaming. "It's a beautiful day. Go have some fun."
He nodded, his hat bouncing a little. "Thank you," he replied, again, before starting to walk again. He was in a giant square of some kind, and there was a clock tower in the middle of it. Smells of something delicious wafted through the air. At the sight of the clock, though, he paused, remembering. He had a ticket to the show at the Castle. Some sort of 'surplus' that a man had given him for not very much gil.
As Vivi turned to head to the Castle proper, or at least get somewhere closer, a man went rushing past him, muttering about how late he was. He knocked the flower right out of Vivi's gloved hand. It tumbled to the ground, where another busy citizen, a woman with long blonde hair, stepped on it in her hurry to go the opposite direction.
Vivi stared down at his flower, forlorn, for a moment, before shaking himself and continuing to walk. Well, it had been a nice idea.

Skills and Abilities:
Black Magic: Vivi has become, by this point, a practiced spellcaster who can use almost all of his tiers. He uses Black Magic, as it is only available to Black Mages (at least that canon shows), which is the manipulation of natural forces and elements to inflict damage on others. His Black Magic requires mana, which regenerates naturally but can run out during a fight. This can also roughly translate to pure energy: if he uses too many spells, he gets too tired to use any more. One night of rest restores it.
→Blizzard/Blizzara: Inflicts ice elemental damage on one target and any other targets in the immediate vicinity. Blizzard is minor damage. Blizzara is medium damage.
→Fire/Fira: Inflicts fire elemental damage on one target and any other targets in the immediate vicinity. Minor and medium ranks, as with Blizzard/Blizzara.
→Thunder/Thundara: Inflicts lightning elemental damage on one target and any other targets in the immediate vicinity. Minor and medium ranks.
→Osmose: Steals mana/energy from a target and puts it into Vivi's pool. Will not work from a target who does not have mana.
Other Skills: Vivi is an accomplished reader because of his grandpa, and he likes it quite a bit. As a result, he also knows how to write. Over the course of his travels on Gaia, Vivi saw many things both natural and unnatural, such as a revolutionary new type of airship. He has a reasonable working of science and chemistry, but only from reading about it rather than practical experience.
Physical Qualities: Vivi is identical to that of a nine-year-old child and, even then, isn't terribly strong. He's also very clumsy; it's easy to knock him off of his feet. All that said, he carries his trusty wooden stave with him at all times, and is capable of doing a decent thwack with it when his mana runs out.
